As the foundation’s first line of duty, the Memorial Games Night was the main event of the Erico Jr. Foundation.


It featured several games and tributes in honor of Joe Erico’s passion and love for sports, as well as a celebration of the life and legacy of the former Super Eagles goalkeeper and assistant coach.

Nigerian athlete, Micheal Eric has officially announced the launch of a charity organization – Erico JR Foundation – in honor of his father and sports legend, Joe Erico who passed away recently at the age of 72 after a brief illness.


Established on the eve of his passing, Michael confirmed his personal conviction to start this initiative, thus the birth of the Erico JR Foundation.


Speaking about the honorary event, Micheal Eric commented

"I want to use this event to shine light on the legacy of Joe Erico. The man he was, the uniqueness of his personality and also continue what he instilled in me as a person and young man. He taught me to be thankful and give back and that’s what I’m going to do. If he had 20 of something and someone was in immediate need, he was willing to give it all. Erico Jr. Foundation aims to give a lot of opportunity to the kids and a hope for a brighter future."

Given the current state of affairs, the event took place Tuesday, February 2nd 2021 at Warriors Basketball Court, Industrial Avenue, Ilupeju, Odi-Olowo, Lagos while ensuring maximum compliance to the COVID-19 protocols and government directives as safety masks were available and social distancing practiced.

Born Joseph Eric, Joe Erico was a goalkeeper, trainer and assistant coach for the Nigerian Super Eagles National Soccer Team.


He was better known by the nickname ‘Jogo Bonito’, given to him by his admirers due to the attractive style of play showcased by his teams.

Prior to being part of the Super Eagles coaching crew, Joe Erico also had a prolific career as a goalie for the national team and even he placed third at the 1976 AFCON in Ethiopia.



He was also a part of the technical crew that led Nigeria to the 2000 & 2002 African Cup of Nations and the 2002 FIFA World Cup.⁣


On January 21st 2021, the former Nigerian goalkeeper, passed away due to ilness.⁣ Left to mourn him are his wife and children, one of whom is Nigerian National Basketball team forward, Michael Eric, Erico Jr.
